What We Want Children to Learn
At our school, Religious Education helps children explore what it means to believe, belong and live. Through engaging learning experiences, pupils develop respect, curiosity and understanding of different religions and worldviews, while reflecting on their own values and identity. Our RE curriculum is structured around three key strands: Believing, Belonging and Living. Through the Believing strand, children explore key beliefs, teachings and stories from a range of religions and worldviews, developing an understanding of how these beliefs influence the lives of individuals and communities. In the Belonging strand, pupils learn about religious practices, traditions and ways of life, and consider how people express their identity and sense of belonging through worship, festivals and community. The Living strand encourages children to explore how beliefs influence the way people live their lives, including the choices they make, how they act within their communities and how they respond to moral and ethical questions, while also reflecting on their own values and experiences. Across all year groups, knowledge is built progressively, enabling children to deepen their understanding as they move through the school.
How We Teach It
We deliver RE through engaging, inclusive and enquiry-based learning that captures children’s curiosity and encourages them to think deeply about the world around them. Lessons are centred around big questions which promote investigation, discussion, reflection and debate, allowing pupils to explore, interpret and evaluate different viewpoints with confidence. Children work with high-quality texts, stories and artefacts from a range of faiths, helping them to develop a rich understanding of religious traditions and beliefs. Through thoughtful discussion and reflection, they build critical thinking skills and empathy for others. Learning is further enhanced through visits and visitors, which bring RE to life and provide meaningful real-world connections. We also make links to our local community, helping children understand how religion and belief are lived within the diverse context of West Yorkshire. Creative opportunities, including art, drama and writing, enable children to express and explore their ideas in different ways. RE also plays an important role in supporting pupils’ Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development. All lessons are carefully planned to ensure clear progression, build subject-specific vocabulary and support all learners. We create a safe and respectful environment where children feel confident to share their thoughts, listen to others and value different perspectives.
What Children Will Achieve
By the time children leave our school, they will have a secure understanding of a range of religions and worldviews and be able to explain key beliefs and practices. They will show respect for diversity, ask thoughtful questions and express their ideas with confidence. Pupils will reflect on their own values, demonstrate empathy and understand the importance of community, applying their understanding to the way people live their lives. This equips them with the knowledge and skills to thrive in modern Britain.
Our Vision
We aim to provide a rich and inclusive RE curriculum that nurtures thoughtful, respectful and open-minded individuals. Through our focus on Believing, Belonging and Living, children develop an understanding of a range of religions and worldviews, learn to appreciate diversity and reflect on their own beliefs and values. Our vision is for every child to leave our school as a confident, compassionate and reflective individual who understands their place in a diverse world and contributes positively to their community
